Real community building: a wooden house without nails

Real community building: a wooden house without nails

My recent experience of riding on the back of a bike in Amsterdam with a lot of baggage prompted flashbacks to China where I always sat on the back of the Strange Dane’s pink bike. We went everywhere around Kunming like this!

Then this quirky scene taken in Guizhou, south-west of China popped into my mind: a whole village of men, of all ages and sizes, building a house together without nails. Yep, they were still hanging out a couple of hours later when we came back.

I love that this is literally a “community building” project – the men in the village will help the person in need to build a house. One day, each one of them knows that they will need aid as well. They also know that they’ll get it because they were there for their fellow neighbours when they were in need!

Fellow travellers, I’m sure you have experienced many moments that are a bit quirky too. Do you have any examples of community bonding or development?
